Soaring UK temperatures herald comeback for caravans

April 12th, 2007

The humble caravan is set to make a comeback this summer thanks to a predictions of scorching temperatures heralding a shift towards taking holidays in the UK.

This coupled with increasing awareness of the damage air travel can do to the environment is leading consumers back to domestic breaks on wheels.

Analysts at Freeads.co.uk, the UK's leading independent classified website, have seen a significant spike in traffic to its caravans and camper vans section, since the Met Office issued its forecast for a balmy summer of 2007.

Hundreds are being bought and sold on Freeads.co.uk each week, a trend which Freeads.co.uk expects to gather pace as the May Bank Holidays loom and the summer gets underway.

Chief executive Duncan Horton said: "Jeremy Clarkson probably won't be happy with this news as caravans are often considered the scourge of motorists everwhere, but the reality is caravans offer a great value way of getting away from it all in the UK.

"When the weather is good here there is no better place to go on holiday. And at the moment the notion of keeping things simple, and returning to modest pleasures from your childhood such as caravanning is very appealing for a lot of people.

"Also the impending festival season is driving this growth, buying a second-hand caravan or camper with a group of mates is an increasingly popular way of sorting out in one hit both the transport and accommodation elements for these events."

Prices range from around £600 up to £32,000 for caravans and motorhomes on Freeads.co.uk. Horton commented that the rising number of high-value transactions which take place as a result of the posting on the site is testament to the growing consumer confidence in buying and selling online.

"Just like tank tops and screw-top wine, caravans seem to be the next things to reinvent themselves to become the epitome of cool that not so long ago we laughed at," said Horton.
